Chapter 3: Close encounters

Chapter 3 is about encounters on the ground, told as the witnesses told them. In September 1961 Betty and Barney Hill said a light followed their car through Franconia Notch in New Hampshire; under hypnosis they later described being taken aboard a craft, and their psychiatrist called it a singular psychological aberration. In April 1966 hundreds of children and some teachers at Westall in Melbourne reported a flying object near their school; balloons, a target drogue and false memory have all been suggested. In October 1967 at least eleven people at Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, saw lights over the water, and boats and Navy divers found no trace. In December 1980 US airmen near Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk reported lights among the trees; skeptics point to the Orfordness Lighthouse, flashing about every five seconds, and say the landing marks were rabbit diggings. In September 1994, 62 pupils at Ariel School in Zimbabwe described a craft and figures in the bush. You find the light on the forest horizon.

About the stories

20 UFO Sightings and What Really Happened is a set of true stories in six short chapters, each on its own page. Tap the right side of the screen for the next slide and the left side to go back, hold to pause, and use the button at the end of a chapter for the next one. Three parts are written live by AI and labelled: a read of your answers, the Sky Desk and a what-if scene. The AI is told not to invent facts and can still make mistakes; if it is busy, a hand-written text appears instead and says so.

Every story was checked on 16 October 2026 against pages we opened, all listed on the first page. What witnesses said they saw is told as their account. The pictures are open-licence photos from Wikimedia Commons and our own drawings; no film stills or official art are used. Your answers stay in this browser tab and are cleared when you close it.
